Buffalo Bay Centre offers ....

The Buffalo Bay Centre is a great resource for the region and the staff and students of Northern Lakes College. Located just down the hill from the main campus in Grouard, it offers a relaxed atmosphere and a magnificent view of Buffalo Bay and the surrounding hills. The building is unique in the College, comfortably furnished for meetings and retreats of all sorts. In addition, the building can be used for individual overnight accommodation for group events where togetherness is desirable. Programming, catered meals and the use of other College facilities can also be arranged.

Whether you are booking the Buffalo Bay Centre for accommodations only, or looking for us to organize a program for your event, there is plenty to do while you are here. Located in a community with

* History......
Grouard is an old community with a fascinating history. Beginning with the aboriginal peoples, the story includes the fur trade, the missionaries and mission schools, the gold rush, land speculation and increasing settlement of the area by people from far-away places. You can take a walk on the historic Grouard-Peace River Trail past the original North West Mounted Police buildings at Police Point, tour the St. Bernard Church that Bishop Grouard himself was heavily involved in building over one hundred years ago. A recreation of old Grouard is underway at the Grouard Historical Village, expected to be operational in 2005.

* Natural Beauty.....
Walk the banks of Buffalo Bay and look for some of the 200 species of birds that frequent the area – or just walk the community and enjoy the spectacular view to the west overlooking Buffalo Bay and the meadow beyond.

* Cultural.....
Explore the culture of the north by touring the Native Cultural Arts Museum right on campus. Ask us to organize a workshop to show you some of the Aboriginal or Metis cultures – beadwork, birch bark basketry, moccasin-making and many more crafts are available, and we can set up workshops in drumming, dance, handgames and other aspects of the cultures of the north.

* Sport and Fitness....
Winter or summer, there is lots to do in Grouard. Try sport fishing or swimming on Lesser Slave Lake or throw in your line from the Grouard bridge. Cross-country skis and snowshoes are available from our recreation department, and our gym and weight room offers opportunities for the fitness buff. Ice fishing, hay rides, canoeing or kayaking can be organized for groups.
