Program Length: 10 Months (2 terms of 20 weeks)

The Adult High School program provides students with the opportunity to continue their education in preparation for career training, post secondary studies, or employment. Students will receive assistance from the Educational Counsellor and Learning Facilitator to determine the courses they require and to develop an Educational Plan to attain their chosen goal.  Students can enroll either part time or full time.

The Adult Basic Education program provides students with the opportunity to continue their education in preparation for high school study, career training or employment. Students will receive assistance from the Educational Counselor and Learning Facilitators to determine the courses they require and to develop an Education Plan to reach their chosen goal.  Students can enroll either part time or full time.

Program of Study:

ADULT BASIC EDUCATION:  Students take the courses they require to meet their eductional goals.  Core courses include Math and Communications (Engllish Language Arts).  Options include Employability, Science and Social Studies.

ADULT HIGH SCHOOL:  Students develop an Educational Plan and enroll in courses they require to gain entrance to the Career Training or University Studies program of their choice.  Core academic courses include English Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, Information Processing, Science, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. In special circumstances, courses may be accessed through the Alberta Distance Learning Centre.

There are over fifty classes offered.  Please see the course catalogue for a complete listing of Academic Upgrading courses.  Students will receive assistance from a Counsellor in selecting the required courses.

Blended, face-to-face and on-line

Admission Requirements:

- Demonstrate ready, willing and able
- Attend a personal interview

Application Process:

APPLICATION: Complete and submit the Northern Lakes College application form (available at all Northern Lakes College locations and on the college website).

TRANSCRIPTS: Provide a high school transcript if available.

ACADEMIC SKILLS APPRAISAL: The College uses the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) to assist in planning for course of studies.

ACCEPTANCE: Applicants who meet the entrance requirements will be accepted and offered a space in the next available offering of the program. In some cases, the spaces at a specific location may be full and accepted applicants will be placed on a waitlist. These applicants will be accepted in the order of ‘first qualified, first served.” It may also be possible to transfer to another location if there is space. Applicants will receive a letter informing them of their acceptance status.

FUNDING: Applicants are encouraged to check on funding options early. Counsellors can assist with identifying funding options and applying for sponsorship of fees and living costs.

REGISTRATION: Before the start date of the program, accepted applicants will receive information about registration dates, times, locations and other information to assist them in planning.

Transferability:

Not as a program.  However, the courses follow the Alberta Education curriculum and student results appear on an Alberta Education transcript.  These courses are recognized by Alberta's post secondary learning institutions, as well as some in other provinces.
