Carpenter Apprentice - First Period

The First Period Carpentry Program provides students with the practical skills and theory necessary to write the First Period Carpenter Apprenticeship Theory Exam and a practical evaluation. The Apprenticeship program is an option for an individual to become an experienced tradesperson while maintaining employment and income. A registered apprentice can expect to spend about 80% of their time learning on-the-job with their employer while earning wages that increase with each period completed.  Registration for this program opens on May 17, 2010.

Program Delivery:

Instruction combines traditional classroom and practical shop setting.

Admission Requirements:

Students entering the program must first be registered as an apprentice with the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AAIT) office.  The Slave Lake Office can be contacted at 780-849-7228 or visit the forms section at www.tradesecrets.gov.ab.ca for an application. Those who want to become an apprentice must meet the following academic requirements:

Route 1:
applicants must have completed Grade 9;

Route 2:
applicants must have received a passing mark on the Apprenticeship Level 2 entrance exam. Applicants must also be hired as an Apprentice with an approved employer and have their “Blue Book” proving they are registered with Alberta Apprenticeship.

Application Process:

APPLICATION: Complete and submit the Northern Lakes College application form (available at all Northern Lakes College locations and on the college website).

APPLICANTS for the Apprenticeship program must be registered with Alberta Apprenticeship. Application forms can be downloaded from the Alberta Apprenticeship website, www.tradesecrets.gov.ab.ca

ACCEPTANCE: Applicants who are verified through the Alberta Apprenticeship will be accepted and offered a space in the next available offering of the program. When spaces are full, they will be placed on a waitlist. Applicants will be accepted in the order of ‘first qualified, first served.” They will receive a letter informing them of their acceptance status.

FUNDING: Applicants are encouraged to check on funding options early. Counsellors can assist with identifying funding options and applying for sponsorship of fees and living costs.

REGISTRATION: Before the start date of the program, accepted applicants will receive information about registration dates, times, locations and other information to assist them.
