Electrician Apprentice First Period

This program will provide first period electrician apprenticeship students with the skills and theory necessary to write the first period Alberta Apprenticeship exam. Topics covered include circuit fundamentals, electrical magnetic sources, lab fundamentals, Canadian Electrical Code part 1, blueprints, controls and switching circuits. 

Registration for this program opens on May 17, 2010.

Program Delivery:

Traditional classroom settings and electrical shop/lab work. 

Admission Requirements:

Students entering the program must first be registered as an apprentice with the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AAIT) office (Slave Lake, 849-7228) or visit the forms section at www.tradesecrets.gov.ab.ca for an application. Those who want to become an apprentice must meet the following academic requirements:

Route 1: applicants must have completed Grade 12; Grade 12 with Applied Math 20 (Math 23) or equivalent AND 10 credits in Science.
Route 2:  applicants must have received a passing mark on the Apprenticeship Level 5 entrance exam. Applicants must also be hired as an apprentice with an approved employer.

* For either route, all applicants must also be hired as an Apprentice with an approved employer and registered with Alberta Apprenticeship.

Application Process:

APPLICATION: Complete and submit the Northern Lakes College application form (available at all Northern Lakes College locations and on the college website).

APPRENTICESHIP EXAM: Applicants meeting admissions requirements must call the Apprenticeship & Trade Certification Branch nearest to their location to make arrangements for writing the Apprenticeship Entrance Exam. In Slave Lake, call (780) 849-7217.

APPLICANTS for the Apprenticeship program must be registered with Alberta Apprenticeship. Application forms can be downloaded from the Alberta Apprenticeship website, www.tradesecrets.gov.ab.ca

ACCEPTANCE: Applicants who meet the requirements will be accepted and offered a space in the next available offering of the program. In some cases, the spaces at a specific location may be full and accepted applicants will be placed on a waitlist. These applicants will be accepted in the order of ‘first qualified, first served.” It may also be possible to transfer to another location if there is space. Applicants will receive a letter informing them of their acceptance status 

FUNDING: Applicants are encouraged to check on funding options early. Counsellors can assist with identifying funding options and applying for sponsorship of fees and living costs.

REGISTRATION: Before the start date of the program, accepted applicants will receive information about registration dates, times, locations and other information to assist them.

Transferability:

Any Alberta Apprenticeship and Training approved provider.

Employment Opportunities:

Employment with a registered employer through the apprenticeship program.
Employment with private individuals or with companies. Many students who complete the apprenticeship program and have achieved Journeyman status begin their own business.
