Oilfield Operator Training

Program Length: 4 Months in class and 1 Month Work Experience

Oil and Gas production companies indicate there is a high demand for pre-trained production operators. They are looking for career-minded, mechanically inclined, logical thinkers with a high desire to problem solve and work independently. The Oilfield Operator Training Program provides hands-on production operations, production reporting and optimization training complete with safety and environmental awareness. Using advanced in-house training facilities including functioning demonstration labs, computer controlled and transparent oil/gas processing facilities and 3D software process simulators, this course will build confidence as you start your oilfield career. Upon completion of your training, you will receive a Northern Lakes College credential for Oilfield Operator Training Program & a Certificate of Achievement for Production Field Operations. Production Field Operations (PFO) is completed as part of this program.

Program Delivery:

The Oilfield Operator Training Program is offered onsite and includes classroom instruction, hands-on lab work and computer simulation. As well there is a one month Work Experience field placement.

Admission Requirements:

-Grade 12 Diploma OR GED OR Credit in English (10-1 or 10-2) and Math 10 (Pure or Applied), Math Prep 10 or a pass mark in NLC's Trades Entrance Math Science.

**Applicants without the necessary transcripts will be considered if they satisfactorily complete a Skills Appraisal Assessment-Form.

NOTE:  Employers typically require employees to have a Grade 12 Diploma or GED.

Application Process:

APPLICATION: Complete and submit the Northern Lakes College application form (available at all Northern Lakes College locations and on the college website).

TRANSCRIPTS: Provide an official high school and/or post-secondary transcript. This must be forwarded directly to Northern Lakes College, Admissions Services, from the granting institution (there may be a charge for this). If the high school is in Alberta, the College may be able to obtain marks directly from Alberta Education. When transcripts are received at NLC, they are reviewed to determine if the academic requirements for admission to the program are met.

ACADEMIC SKILLS APPRAISAL: If transcripts are not available or do not show the academic requirements, applicants may complete the Academic Skills Appraisal for the English or Math (or both) requirement. The College uses the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE). If testing is required, the applicant will be informed and arrangements made for writing the test. Although every effort will be made to set up the testing at a location and time most convenient for the applicant, it may be necessary to travel to a College campus for this.

INSTRUCTOR INTERVIEW: Applicants who meet the academic requirements will have to have an interview with the Program Advisor. This may be over the phone or in person.

ACCEPTANCE: Applicants who meet the academic requirements will be accepted and offered a space in the next available offering of the program. In some cases, the spaces at a specific location may be full and accepted applicants will be placed on a waitlist. These applicants will be accepted in the order of ‘first qualified, first served.” It may also be possible to transfer to another location if there is space. Applicants will receive a letter informing them of their acceptance status.

FUNDING: Applicants are encouraged to check on funding options early. Counsellors can assist with identifying funding options and applying for sponsorship of fees and living costs. For information about student funding options call Counselling Services-Doris Prince at 780-751-3209.

REGISTRATION: Before the start date of the program, accepted applicants will receive information about registration dates, times, locations and other information to assist them.

Employment Opportunities:
Major oil and gas producing companies hire (or contract) people into the position of Field Operator or Battery Operator.  Operators monitor production from the well to the sales line.  Oil field production operators are usually responsible for a number of wells (the number depending on the size of the oil field, level of automation, production systems and company operating the wells).  Specific duties vary from one position to another and from one company to another.
