Power Lab

 

Program Year: 2010-2011

Program Length: 5 weeks

Program Description:

The 4th Class Power Lab is a 5 week hands-on training session offered by the SAIT Energy Department at the Calgary campus. This course is approved by the Alberta Boiler Safety Association (ABSA) as meeting the firing time requirement to write the ABSA Power Engineering 4th Class Part B examination. SAIT reserves several seats in the Power Lab each year for interested Northern Lakes College Power Engineering graduates. Students fill out a Northern Lakes College (NLC) application form to begin the process of being registered in the Power Lab through NLC.

Program of Study:
PWEN0225 – 5 week Power Lab course - optional – SAIT 

Program Delivery:

The 5 week program is offered in the Power Lab at the SAIT institute of Technology in Calgary. Delivery includes both theory and hands on practical application.

Admission Requirements:

-Must be enrolled or a past graduate of NLC 4th Class Power Engineering Program.
-Phone interview with Claire Russell.

Application Process:

APPLICATION: Complete and submit the Northern Lakes College application form (available at all Northern Lakes College locations and on the College website at www.northernlakescollege.ca).

TRANSCRIPTS: Provide an official high school and/or post-secondary transcript. This must be forwarded directly to Northern Lakes College, Admissions Services, from the granting institution (there may be a charge for this). If the high school is in Alberta, the College may be able to obtain marks directly from Alberta Education. When transcripts are received at NLC, they are reviewed to determine if the academic requirements for admission to the program are met.

ACADEMIC SKILLS APPRAISAL: If transcripts are not available or do not show the academic requirements, applicants may complete the Academic Skills Appraisal for the English or Math (or both) requirement. The College uses the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE). If testing is required, the applicant will be informed and arrangements made for writing the test. Contact the campus nearest you to schedule an appointment for testing.

PERSONAL INTERVIEW: Applicants who meet the academic requirements will have to have an interview with the Program Advisor. This may be over the phone or in person.

ACCEPTANCE: Applicants who meet the academic requirements will be accepted and offered a space in the next available offering of the program. In some cases, the spaces at a specific location may be full and accepted applicants will be placed on a waitlist. These applicants will be accepted in the order of first qualified, first served. It may also be possible to transfer to another location if there is space. Applicants will receive a letter informing them of their acceptance status.

FUNDING: Applicants are encouraged to check on funding options early and are responsible for forwarding any sponsorship letters to Admissions as soon as possible. Counsellors can assist with identifying funding options and applying for sponsorship of fees and living costs.

REGISTRATION: Before the start date of the program, accepted applicants will receive information about registration dates, times, locations and other information to assist them.

Students will need to live in Calgary for the 5 weeks. OPTION: SAIT has a residency at a charge.

NOTE: MUST REGISTER WITH NORTHERN LAKES COLLEGE AND PAY IN FULL BY JANUARY 29, 2010 FOR 2010 LABS AND BY JANUARY 31, 2011 FOR 2011 LABS TO CONFIRM YOU’RE SEAT.

Transferability:

Full Power Engineering 4th Class certification is transferable to institutions offering a 3rd class program.

Employment Opportunities:

Graduates operate boilers and associated equipment at large scale industrial facilities. In the local region, these include mills and waste treatment plants. Outside the region, they also include power plants, refineries, breweries, large gas plants and steam assisted heavy oil recovery projects.
