To print 2010-2011 Program Information, press HERE Are you interested in a diverse career that services many different industries including mining, forestry,oil and gas, as well as industrial commercial and residential construction? Boom Truck Operators have endless career options. You could work as an employee, contractor, sub-contractor or even start your own business! As a Boom Truck operator you will operate and service hoist and swing equipment used to move machinery and other large objects. You will learn to set up, service and operate hydraulic booms mounted on turrets that are affixed to trucks capable of moving heavy loads.
To start your career training with Northern Lakes College you must first be a registered apprentice with Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training. Admission Requirements:
Students entering the program must first be registered as an apprentice with the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AAIT) office (Slave Lake Office 780-849-7228) or visit the forms section at www.tradesecrets.gov.ab.ca for an application.
Those who want to become an apprentice must meet the following academic requirements:
Route 1: applicants must have completed Grade 10 or equivalent; Route 2: applicants must have received a passing mark on the Apprenticeship Level 2 entrance exam.
* All applicants must also be hired as an Apprentice with an approved employer and registered with Alberta Apprenticeship.

Application Process:
APPLICATION: Complete and submit the Northern Lakes College application form (available at all Northern Lakes College locations and on the college website).
APPRENTICESHIP EXAM: Applicants needing to meet admission requirements must call the Apprenticeship & Trade Certification Branch nearest to their location to make arrangements for writing the Apprenticeship Entrance Exam. In Slave Lake, call 780-849-7228.
APPLICANTS for the apprenticeship program must be registered with Alberta Apprenticeship. Application forms can be downloaded from the Alberta Apprenticeship website, www.tradesecrets.gov.ab.ca
ACCEPTANCE: Applicants who meet the requirements will be accepted and offered a space in the next available offering of the program. In some cases, the spaces at a specific location may be full and accepted applicants will be placed on a waitlist. These applicants will be accepted in the order of ‘first qualified, first served.” It may also be possible to transfer to another location if there is space. Applicants will receive a letter informing them of their acceptance status.
FUNDING: Applicants are encouraged to check on funding options early. Counsellors can assist with identifying funding options and applying for sponsorship of fees and living costs.
REGISTRATION: Before the start date of the program, accepted applicants will receive information about registration dates, times, locations and other information to assist them.

Employment Opportunities:
Boom truck operators are employed by general contractors and subcontractors in the forestry, mining, construction and oil industries, and by crane rental companies. Employment prospects change with seasonal and economic climates.
