Health Care Aide (Government of Alberta Provincial Curriculum) - Prior Learning Assessment & Recognition Program (PLAR)

This program will prepare the student to become a vital member of the health care team. The Health Care Aide assists professional nurses in performing activities of daily living for clients of all ages. Graduates may work in acute or continuing care, including long term care, home care and assisted living. The Health Care Aide Program follows the Government of Alberta provincial curriculum. The student must be currently employed as an uncertified health care aide and seeking recognition for skills and knowledge through certification.  The Prior Learning and Assessment program is recommended for those who are very experienced and have vast knowledge of the Health Care Aide role.

Program Delivery:
This program is independent study, with tutorial support and instructor face to face assessments.

Admission Requirements:

- Must be employed as a non certified health care aide by an approved health care provider (partner). 
- Credit in English 10-2 (English 13) or an equivalent or successfully complete a skills appraisal assessment
- Fluency in English

Credit in Grade 10 Math (Pure or Applied)  or equivalent is strongly recommended

Application Process:

APPLICATION:  Complete and submit the Northern Lakes College application form (available at all Northern Lakes College locations and on the college website.)

TRANSCRIPTS:  Provide an official high school and/or post-secondary transcript.  This must be forwarded directly to Northern Lakes College, Admissions Services, from the granting institution (there may be a charge for this).  If the high school attended is in Alberta, the College may be able to obtain marks directly from Alberta Learning.  When transcripts are received at NLC, they are reviewed to determine if the academic requirements for admission to the program are met.

ACADEMIC SKILLS APPRAISAL:  If transcripts are not available or do not show the academic requirements, applicants may complete the Academic Skills Appraisal for the English and Math requirement.  The College uses the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE). If testing is required, the applicant will be informed and arrangements made for writing the test.  Although every effort will be made to set up the testing at a location and time most convenient for the applicant, it may be necessary to travel to a College campus for this.

FORMS:  Applicants will be sent forms for student self assessment of skills, supervisor assessment form and knowledge application questions that are to be completed and submitted to Admissions Services.

ACCEPTANCE:  Applicants who meet the academic and non academic requirements will be accepted.

Travel to an NLC campus maybe required to complete assessments.  Any expenses incurred related to required travel are the student's responsibility.

Locations:

Any eligible worksite if employed as a Health Care Aide.

Offering Dates:
First day of each month except July and August.

Employment Opportunities:
Graduates are able to work as important members of the health care team in acute care and continuting care settings, including long term care, home care, assisted living and lodges.
