Qualifications:

  • Graduate degree in a related field is preferred. However, a combination of an undergraduate degree with relevant work experience may be considered (annual salary would be adjusted based on the undergraduate degree).
  • A minimum of 5 years working in a post-secondary environment in a related position.
  • Proficiency using Learning Management Systems and synchronous teaching platforms, such as Brightspace, Collaborate Ultra, and Zoom.
  • Excellent knowledge of Instructional Design principles.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to work both in a team environment and independently.

Suggested Additional Qualifications:

  • Class five driver’s license.

Successful candidate must provide university transcripts, and proof of valid driver’s license to Human Resources prior to commencement.

Job Description

Title: Instructional Designer

Department: Centre for Teaching and Learning

Nature and Scope of Work

The Instructional Designer has primary responsibility for the development of courses for online and blended delivery. This position provides faculty development of online pedagogy and educational technology tools and resources; ensures that quality standards are in place and implemented; establishes, and coordinates design teams of subject matter experts and developers to create pedagogically-sound courses that are regularly evaluated and updated.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Design/Development of Online and Blended Courses

  • Research:
    • emerging technologies and software for course development and delivery; and
    • best practices for online and blended delivery pedagogy.
  • Develop Online Courses:
    • Work with Subject Matter Experts to design pedagogically sound online and blended courses.
    • Design online courses with pedagogical strategies appropriate to the learning objectives of the course.
    • Create learning objects to enhance course interactivity.
    • Devise instructional strategies to make optimal use of human resources, educational technologies, and pedagogical innovations.
    • Evaluate course design processes.
  • Institute Systematic Quality Control
    • Support the Dean, Academic Development & Quality in ensuring courses meet quality standards for online and blended delivery.
    • Develop evaluation tools for use in the Colleges’ Learning Management System to monitor the quality of online instruction from the points of view of learners, faculty, and the institution.
    • Report evaluation results to appropriate stakeholders.
    • Conduct evaluations of new and revised online courses to determine adherence to quality standards.
    • Advise faculty and management regarding online delivery practices and standards.

Instruction of Educational Technologies and Online Pedagogy

  • Build and promote NLCs online teaching community.
  • In collaboration with other members of the Centre for Teaching and Learning, prepare and deliver seminars and workshops for faculty on online teaching and learning.
  • Consult with groups or individuals on topics related to online teaching and course design.
  • Prepare and deliver seminars and workshops on the use of:
    • D2L/Brightspace;
    • Collaborate Ultra and Zoom;
    • Respondus and StudyMate; and
    • Other educational technology tools as required.

Skills/Knowledge:

  • Excellent knowledge of Learning Management Systems and synchronous teaching platforms, such as Brightspace, Collaborate Ultra, and Zoom.
  • Excellent knowledge of Instructional Design
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills
