  • An Advance Care Paramedic Diploma is preferred;
  • A Primary Care Paramedic, with related education and experience may be considered;
  • Preference is 5-year registration with the Alberta College Paramedics or an appropriate regulatory body with a minimum 2-year instructor experience;
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills;
  • Current CPR;
  • Clear Criminal Record/ Vulnerable Sector Check;
  • Unrestricted, Class 5 Alberta Driver’s License.

Position Description

Instructor Paramedic Programs

Nature and Scope of Work

The key responsibilities include planning, preparing and delivery of instruction and evaluation of students to foster readiness to meet the expectations of an entry-level practitioner. Administrative duties and responsibilities for student and stakeholder relations and adherence to college values, policies, procedures and regulations are expectations of the role. Working as integral member of the instructor and program team is also an expectation in this role. The position reports to the Chair, Allied Health Programs.

Duties and Responsibilities Instruction 

  • Maintain subject matter expertise and competencies required to instruct assigned course materials.
  • Establish a working knowledge of the learning outcomes, resources, assessments and delivery methods; to ensure one is able to effectively and efficiently carry out the required course instruction.
  • Establish and maintain a working knowledge of paramedic program and course expectations and standards.
  • Provide individual and group instruction in the classroom, lab and clinical settings, adhering to approved Course Outlines, course and program learning outcomes and established program standards.
  • Develop a working knowledge and implement teaching techniques, strategies and approaches to engage adult learners in effective, meaningful learning experiences.
  • Utilize a variety of instructional techniques and strategies appropriate for adult learners in face-to-face and online distance delivery.
  • Ensure teaching methods adequately address various learning styles (Kinetic, Audio, Visual) regularly assessing the efficiency of the teaching methods.
  • Provide students with accurate and timely information regarding courses and programs.
  • Foster student’s awareness and familiarity with the contents of the student handbooks, program and course materials, college policies, procedures and regulations directly related to students.
  • Maintain current knowledge of professional practice expectations and standards established for the industry by regulatory, governing bodies and current legislations.
  • Foster student development in a manner that support students to be prepared to meet professional practice expectations.
  • Provide timely, informative feedback to students by returning marked assignments, providing access to grades, providing regular progress reports and other appropriate feedback as required.
  • Provide opportunities for students' evaluation of instruction; take remedial action as needed in response to student feedback.
  • Ensure exam security, co-ordinate exam schedules and supervise exams as required.
  • Collaborate with peers to enhance the instructional environment for students.

Student Relations and Support

  • Ensure a working knowledge of student’s rights and responsibilities with the college.
  • Encourage students to take pride in their performance and progress.
  • Employ positive feedback, encouragement and constructive criticism to enhance learning outcomes and to support students to overcome barriers and challenges, as appropriate.
  • Encourage students to review or reflect on their performance on a regular basis.
  • Establish clear, consistent and reasonable expectations for student behaviour consistent with college expectations and expectations of the profession.
  • Support students to access Student Services (Counselling, Learner Success Services, Student finance advisement, etc.); making appropriate referrals when necessary.
  • Support students to access educational resources as required.
  • Build a professional working relationship with students; advocate on behalf of students as appropriate.
  • Demonstrate respect for individual differences and diversity.
  • Encourage peer support activities.
  • Monitor student attendance and progress; identify and assist students experiencing difficulties; implement student action plans or performance contracts as required; make probation and termination recommendations.
  • Appropriately and comprehensively, maintain documentation on students’ progress and follow-up required to address behaviors or risks as required.
  • Organize/facilitate student orientation to the program, college and college services prior to the start of course delivery.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

 Quality Assurance in Program and Service Delivery 

  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of criteria and program outcomes that must be demonstrated for ongoing program approval and accreditation.
  • Contribute to the maintenance of accreditation standards and program approval requirements.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of professional practice standards, code of ethics, legislations and regulations and practice guidelines.
  • Model a positive and professional image in representing the profession.
  • Maintain current registration with the appropriate professional college.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of curriculum for the program, through established and approved processes, indicated by the program leadership.
  • Maintain and encourage professional, positive, productive public relations.
  • Maintain a high standard of client service.
  • Identify and participate in college and program promotional activities.
  • Keep accurate records of student marks, interviews, assessments, required practicum documents and other records as indicated. Track and submit records and student file documents for filing on the student record, in a timely manner.
  • Maintain confidentiality of information and student records in accordance with FOIP legislation, policies, procedures and regulations.
  • Be familiar with and adhere to college and program policies, procedures and guidelines.
  • Participate in regular professional development; annually identify learning goals and provide evidence of progress toward achieving goals as part of the performance appraisal process.
  • Be familiar with relevant OH&S legislations and workplace policies, contribute to a safe and healthy work and learning environment.
  • Adhere to the requirements in the use of college technology in accordance with the guidelines, security measures and policies set forth by the college.
  • Meet professional obligations through efficient work habits such as meeting deadlines, honouring schedules, managing resources, and identifying efficiencies when they exist.
  • Engage in self- reflection and address areas for improvement as recognized.
  • Carry out duties in compliance with applicable legislations, professional regulations and college policies.

  • Previous experience in adult education, a Degree in education is preferred;
  • Experience in quality assurance, curriculum development and experience with accreditation and standard compliance;
  • Certification in one or more the following; ITLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP, CPR, Defensive Driving.
  • Certified Instructor/Coordinator in one or more of the following; ITLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP, CPR, Defensive Driving;
  • Experience teaching with simulation and utilizing simulation equipment;
  • Experience teaching using a variety of distance learning and online teaching technologies.
  • Experience working with diverse cultures;
  • 5 or more years experience as an ALS/BLS Emergency Medical Service provider or other relevant emergency/urgent care health service agency.
