Qualifications:

  • A four-year Bachelor of Education degree or equivalent and eligibility for an Alberta Teacher’s Certificate;
  • Ability to teach up to the 30-level in English Language Arts and Social Studies or Math and Sciences - Alberta Education curriculum;
  • Experience teaching via distributed delivery is desirable;
  • Experience teaching adults is also desirable;

Asset:

  • Experience teaching in a cross-cultural environment and the ability to speak Cree would be assets in this position.

Successful candidate must provide college or university transcripts to Human Resources prior to commencement.

Job Description

Title: Instructor, Academic Upgrading - Distance

Department: Learner Services

Major Job Function:

Northern Lakes College has a presence in 50 communities across north central Alberta. The adult students in any given campus may be enrolled in our Academic Upgrading program. The Academic Upgrading Instructor will deliver educational services predominantly through distance instruction.  Candidates for this position should have excellent computer and telecommunications skills and have strong interpersonal communications skills.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Academic Upgrading Instructor will include three main areas of responsibility:

Relations with students

Focus:  Provide an atmosphere that is conducive to learning in an adult environment.

  • Use encouragement, courtesy and respect with students to establish and maintain effective learning;
  • Establish and maintain a positive rapport with students;
  • Actively involve students in their learning by observing their rights and responsibilities and by assisting them in developing reasonable educational goals;
  • Monitor student performance and provide regular progress reports that enable students to evaluate their performance in relation to their educational goals.

Instructional Responsibilities

Focus: Provide effective instruction to adults, utilizing effective distance and/or face-to-face teaching methods, following the Alberta Education curriculum.

  • Plan and prepare for instruction by reviewing curriculum and identifying materials and methodologies that will meet the individual needs of students;
  • Prepare and provide course outlines that will inform students of course content, evaluation methods, progress timelines and any special attendance requirements;
  • Deliver instruction using teaching strategies that promote cognitive and affective learning, while using appropriate adult education techniques and integrating educational technology to enhance the learning experience;
  • Evaluate instruction by reviewing student results and information from Student Feedback Surveys to develop goals and identify strategies for enhancing and improving overall performance.

Administrative Responsibilities

Focus: Provide information as required in order to maintain accurate student and College records.

  • Track and report attendance;
  • Submit marks, course audit reports, and other relevant information as required.
