Program Description

Be the change. Enrol in Northern Lakes College Addiction Services Worker Program and discover the rewarding challenge of working with people who are affected by addiction. This one-year program takes a holistic approach that includes a belief in the interconnection of mind, body, spirit, and emotion. You will learn about prevention, intervention, and aftercare. Graduates work with communities and organizations to set up and operate programs focused on reducing high levels of alcohol, drug, and solvent abuse.

This program can be taken full-time or part-time, depending on your unique needs. Northern Lakes College offers a high ratio of student-to-instructor time, affordable tuition, and quality programs.

Academic Requirements

Students must work in a NNADAP treatment centre or be sponsored by NNADAP to enroll in this program.
It is recommended that applicants possess a high school diploma or equivalent. Required: 50% in English 30-1 or 60% in English 30-2 or 60% in ENGL0190 or equivalent; or successful completion of an English Equivalency Assessment.

Other Requirements

 Students must work in a NNADAP treatment centre or be sponsored by NNADAP to enroll in this program.
 Participation in a pre-program interview.
 It is strongly recommended that students have a home computer and access to high speed internet. Students without basic computer skills will be encouraged to attend a computer skills workshop prior to the start of the program.
 Practicum agencies may require a Police Information Check and an Alberta Children's Services Intervention Record Check of students placed in their organizations. The inability to present clear checks may prevent a student from completing the program requirements. Contact the Program Coordinator for further information.
 Because of the nature of the program, students must not be abusing alcohol or drugs for at least 1 year prior to applying. Additionally, students must not abuse alcohol or drugs for the duration of the program.

Transferability

Students may apply to Northern Lakes Colleges' Addictions Counselling Diploma Program. Some credits may be transferable into other programs at Northern Lakes College (e.g. Social Work and Practical Nurse).
University credits are transferable to many post-secondary institutions in Alberta; refer to the Alberta Transfer Guide.
