Program Description

This occupation is most rewarding for those who enjoy variety, security and doing precision work with machinery and equipment. Industrial Mechanics (Millwrights) install, maintain, repair and troubleshoot stationary industrial machinery and mechanical equipment in sites such as factories, production plants and recreational facilities. To be successful in their trade, Industrial Mechanics need the strength and stamina required to work with heavy equipment weighing in excess of 25 kilograms, good coordination and manual dexterity, the ability to visualize a layout by looking at plans and blueprints, the ability to comprehend and trouble-shoot mechanical systems, the ability to get along with and sometimes supervise the work of others.

Academic Requirements

Minimum Requirement: English 20-2, Math 20-3, Science 10 Or AIT Entrance Exam.

Category B: Recommended Path: Alberta High School Diploma with: English 30-2, Math 30-3, Physics 30 or Chemistry 30 or Science 30, Related Career and Technology Studies courses. Attendance and participation in "Introduction to Construction Trades."

Other Requirements

If academic requirements are not met you will need to do an ACCUPLACER assessment. Minimum levels: 70 in Reading Comp., 55 in Arithmetic, and 50 in Elementary Algebra. Contact your nearest campus to schedule an appointment. Pre-employment students are NOT required to be registered with Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AIT).
