Alberta Works Grant Funding

Alberta Works Grant funding provides financial support for residents of Alberta who are unemployed or marginally employed, have financial need, and require skills training to find suitable full-time employment.

Students who have been accepted into one of the following Northern Lake College programs may be eligible to receive Alberta Works grant funding through Alberta Human Services.

  • Academic Upgrading - Adult Basic Education (Full-time or part-time; on-site only)
  • Academic Upgrading – Adult High School (Full-time or part-time; on-site only)
  • College and Career Preparation Program (part-time; asynchronous)

Alberta Works Grant funding is administered through Alberta Human Services, Learner Support Income Office (LISO). Northern Lakes College does not determine if you qualify, determine sponsorship amounts, or provide payments to you.

Important Notice for Part-time Applicants

  • The part-time Alberta Works grant (Skills Investment Bursary) does not cover living expenses. As a part-time applicant, you are eligible to receive funds for tuition, mandatory fees, student association fees, books and supplies only.

Important Notice for Full-time Applicants

  • If you are living on reserve and you have an Indian Registration Number, you are not eligible for living expenses through this grant. Living costs are the responsibility of the Income Support program on the reserve. Please refer to our Frequently asked Questions for more information.

Application Process



Apply to an eligible program and meet admissions criteria.*

*Note: If you have been out of the regular K-12 system for more than 2 years, a placement test will be required. Please contact 1-866-652-3456 for more information about the admissions process for your program.



Complete a Career Investigation Report (download and print HERE), then meet with your Program Advisor or Campus Instructor to complete an Education Plan. This will determine your program length and course selections. A Counsellor may assist in this process. For more information, please call 1-866-652-3456 or visit your local campus.

Please note that Counsellors cannot assist students with filling out their applications.



Submit your completed application (or ‘Declaration’ if using the online application) addressed to ‘Counselling Services’ at your local campus. A Trainer Provider Form will be issued for applications received by Counselling Services on or before the deadlines listed below.

Counselling Services will mail out your Application Form/Declaration and attached Trainer Provider Information Form, via government courier, to the Learner Income Support Office. You will receive a letter from NLC confirming the date that this was sent on your behalf.

PLEASE NOTE: We are no longer completing Trainer Provider Forms for the January 2017 semester.



It takes approximately 6-8 weeks for your application to be processed by the Learner Income Support Office (LISO). You will receive a Funding Decision Letter from LISO by regular mail or e-mail once a decision has been made. If you have questions about this letter, or want to inquire about the status of your application, please call 1-800-222-6485.



Please bring a copy of your Funding Decision Letter to your local campus to confirm your sponsorship 2 weeks prior to the start of classes. If you are receiving funds for books and fees, you are responsible for paying these out of your first payment. Failure to do so may prevent you from registering in your program.

Report a change

Please note that you are required to report any changes in personal or financial information to the learner income support office using a CHANGE IN CIRCUMSTANCE FORM. (Please note that this form will only open up using the Internet Explorer browser, it will not work in Firefox, Chrome or other browsers.)
