Job Description

Title: Coordinator, Academic Upgrading 

Department: Learner Services

Major Job Function:

Coordinators provide leadership and support to all Academic Upgrading faculty in order to foster excellence in programming. This position will focus on instruction in the Academic Upgrading program at the Peace River Correctional Centre (PRCC) and is also responsible for the efficient and effective development, and delivery of additional programming. This position will support, and report to the Chair, Academic Upgrading. A sustained effort is required to:

  • Coordinate with learners and other department staff
  • Facilitate learner success
  • Successfully implement all areas of the program
  • Provide leadership in broader-based academic projects for the college.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include the coordination of the Academic Upgrading programming, which are as follows:

Curriculum leadership and project management including:

  • Foster excellence in achievement and instruction
  • Supervise and monitor student progress; implement support strategies as required
  • Chair curriculum committees
  • Provide curriculum leadership, which includes ensuring curriculum compliance, leading reviews, and implementing updates
  • Manage and review standardized exams for various content levels and areas
  • Ensure resource review and renewal
  • Identify and arrange for training needs of students to ensure excellence in instructional and pedagogical best practices
  • Identify and arrange to meet training needs of faculty to ensure excellence in instruction
  • Assist with implementation of new technologies, including research, curriculum or material development, and training
  • Plan, participate in, manage and evaluate projects within the department
  • Research, recommend and implement ABE and High School resources, assessment processes, distributed delivery methods, curriculum changes, diagnostic approaches and learning models
  • Contribute to proposal writing and strategic planning
  • Clarify and ensure compliance with programming outcomes (develop, coordinate and/or implement diagnostic approaches and assessment processes; work collaboratively with others)
  • Research, plan and implement delivery methods and adult learning models appropriate to all levels of program (may include ABE, High School, and others.)
  • Research online software, technology, and other instructional tools for incorporation into teaching practice
  • Maintain, review and revise basic education curriculum guides
  • Organize, market and publish program specific materials (i.e. newsletters, AU Moodle HUB, info pages, etc.)

Program leadership and administrative duties including:

  • Oversee the day-to-day operation of College programming at the Peace River Correctional Centre (PRCC)
  • Work with supervisor to create and maintain a positive environment enabling the team to work as an effective and cohesive unit
  • Participate in regular PRCC and College meetings
  • Work closely with all PRCC staff including senior personnel
  • Collaborate with external agencies to identify projects for student fabrication
  • Ensure all necessary classroom supplies are available for use.
  • Work with supervisor to ensure programming goals align with the college Comprehensive Institutional Plan
  • Educational planning and case management of students
  • Plan and coordinate monthly staff meetings
  • Participate in various committees / meetings as required
  • Plan, coordinate and deliver online orientations to students
  • Work with supervisor on long-term planning and goal setting processes
  • Assist in the development of program and organizational tools
  • Promote, coordinate, and manage new program initiatives
  • Collaborate with other programs/departments to develop and redefine processes regarding programming needs, student issues, staff and student training needs, and others as required
  • Oversee contract training projects that may occur.
  • Ensure organization and maintenance of electronic files
  • Ensure copyright compliance in program and department materials
  • Provide student tutoring as needed
  • Assist in the review of various program accountability processes
  • Assist with the review and updating of program handbooks and guides according to department timelines (i.e. AU Handbook, ABE Instructional Guides, etc.)
  • Collaborate with provincial bodies and institutions
  • Assist in the planning, preparation and facilitation of onsite and online student development days
  • Contribute to annual program reviews as required

Professional development of faculty and staff including:

  • Provide guidance and support to faculty in all program areas, including curriculum, technology, program standards, College policies, etc.
  • Provide basic technical training and support to instructors
  • Conduct workshops on special topics as required
  • Intervene in the matters of student performance as required, providing interpretation of procedures and regulations
  • Arrange online workshops for faculty, staff and student development as required
  • Assist in the preparation of program-specific professional development days
  • Orientation and support of substitute instructors
  • Provide online assistance and training for faculty and others as needed
  • Attend and present as required at online and face to face conferences to promote foundational learning and related initiatives

Mentoring of staff & faculty including:

  • Orientation and ongoing mentorship for new staff
  • Adherence to college Policies, Procedures and Regulations in daily practice.
  • Help support faculty as they endeavor to:
    • Meet students’ learning needs through effective instruction in a nurturing environment
    • Complete administrative tasks in a timely manner
    • Contribute to the values of the College

Instructional duties including:

  • Plan for and instruct in subject areas as assigned
  • Program revision and curriculum development as required

Contribution to the College:

  • Project a positive image of the College and the program
  • Maintain good public relations by acting as a College ambassador
  • Stay current in areas of curriculum, teaching and learning
  • Participate in research projects with the approval of Chair, Dean, and VPA
  • Maintain a safe and healthy work environment

Other duties as required.

Skills/Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of and experience with email, distance delivery software, and learning management systems.
  • Familiarity with Alberta Education mandates, Programs of Study and Guide to Education.
  • Curriculum knowledge and expertise in a designated subject area.

General:

Leadership in instruction and best practices requires a wide range of skills, abilities and experience. Knowledge of adult learning theories or experience teaching adults in varied environments is required. The Coordinator should be skilled in a variety of instructional techniques, course delivery methods, and student centered outcomes.

The successful candidate must have proven and effective skills in communication, leadership, supervision, and decision making.

The individual should be competent with audio-visual equipment, office equipment, distance learning technologies and platforms for a variety of applications.
