Course Description

At the heart of the social studies program are the concepts of citizenship and identity in the Canadian context. BEL 101 Social Studies is the first of three levels of social studies courses at the pre-high school level. Its aim is to promote a sense of belonging and acceptance in students as they engage in active and responsible citizenship. It has a strong introduction to research and inquiry. It explores multiple perspectives, including immigrant, Aboriginal, and Francophone, which contribute to Canada's identity. Students will be introduced to multiple perspectives through the study of film, historical novels, and non-fiction biographies. Students will also have a chance to view and represent information in a variety of ways and to improve their composition and oral presentation skills.
