Course Description

This course will examine how Canadian First Nations peoples have been and are being represented in the dominant culture. It will review images of Indigenous people represented by Canadian historical figures such as Paul Kane, Emily Carr, Pauline Johnson, Grey Owl, and others. The critical analysis will continue to contemporary images in photographs, television, films, videos, magazines, tourist objects, newspapers, and other popular media forms. Using post-modern theory, it will demystify the "essential" Indian and encourage reflection on how to challenge stereotypes that influence the treatment of First Nations people.
