Course Description

This course introduces students to Shakespeare's plays in the four major genres (comedy, tragedy, history, and romance). Students will read the plays as literary texts, paying attention to elements such as language, structure, tone, theme, and plot and character development. Students will also engage with the plays as performance texts shaped by the interpretive choices of film or theatre practitioners. The class will read four of Shakespeare's plays and watch at least two filmed performances (one filmed theatrical performance and one film).
