Course Description

This course covers a broad range of topics related to the educational landscape of teaching in Canada. The profession of teaching is examined by exploring key topics such as why people choose to become teachers; the work and challenges of teaching; and perspectives of accomplished teachers who effect positive change in classrooms, schools, and communities. Education foundations and their implications on practice today is considered. These foundations include philosophical, historical, social, cultural, and political dimensions. Student diversity is discussed along with the impact it has on classroom dynamics, curricula, and student learning. A wide variety of examples, historical data, perspectives, and current issues and trends are presented in this course. Key goals are to develop professional knowledge and to encourage pre-service teachers to evaluate assumptions and expectations in preparation for entering the profession of teaching.
