This course provides an introductory survey of Canadian history from roughly 1500 to 1867. Several of the main political, economic, and social aspects of Canadian life will be examined. Some of the major themes to be discussed are Aboriginal-European contact, the fur trade, New France, and the expansion of white settlement. In addition, key concepts and methods of history as a discipline will be reviewed. Combined with HIST2610, this course provides a complete survey of Canadian history and a foundation for future study in this area.
