Northern Lakes College Hosts Junior High Welding Camp

Posted on Feb 8, 2023

Slave Lake, Alberta (February 8, 2023): Junior High students aged 13 to 15, from various communities in the region, are participating in a welding camp from February 8 to 10. Northern Lakes College is hosting the camp at the Slave Lake Trades & Technology Centre.

Students are learning the proper use of hand tools, the basics of Gas Metal Arc Welding, and welding safety, and will be introduced to weld symbols. The program includes a tour of a local welding shop, Heavy Equipment Repair. Students will create and complete a project they can take home with them at the end of the camp.

“This camp is a great opportunity for junior high youth to learn about the welding trade by exploring the welding shop, building confidence with skills, and discovering if a future welding career interests them,” comments Angie White, Chair of Trades & Resource Technology at Northern Lakes College.

The camp provides youth with a safe, experiential learning opportunity to explore the welding trade with professional welders in a hands-on environment. Northern Lakes College welding instructors have experience in the field that allows them to share with students the realities, challenges, and rewards of the welding profession.

Participants who enjoy the welding camp, and other interested students, can take advantage of Dual Credit opportunities offered by Northern Lakes College. Dual Credit allows high school students to participate in apprenticeship welding courses and obtain both high school and post-secondary credit. Through Dual Credit, high school students are able to complete the first year of a trade, giving them a head start into a career after high school graduation.

This is the first welding camp held since 2019. Previous camps were hosted in Wabasca in 2016, High Prairie in 2017, High Level in 2018, and Slave Lake in 2019.
