Slave Lake, Alberta (May 3, 2022): Northern Lakes College has received reapproval of its Social Work Diploma program for seven years, which is the maximum length of approval granted. The review was conducted by the Alberta College of Social Workers, the regulatory body responsible for the approval of Social Work programs in the province of Alberta. The process is rigorous, including a review of curriculum, administrative practices, staffing, and both faculty and student experiences.

“This seven-year reapproval speaks to the quality of the program and the student experience in the program. Our Supported Distance Learning delivery model recognizes that our students need to balance their school obligations with their family and work lives. The hard work of the faculty involved in the delivery of the Social Work Diploma is a significant contributor to the success of the program,” comments Dr. Michelle Mitchell, Dean, Humanities, University Studies & Quality and Interim Dean, Health.

Graduates of the NLC Social Work diploma program are eligible for professional registration for entry-level or practice positions, and for entry into year three of a four-year degree program. The Northern Lakes College program provides direct transfer to the Bachelor of Social Work at the University of Calgary.

Seven of the program’s courses are available to students still in high school, through the College’s Dual Credit offerings. This provides them with an opportunity to enter the program after high school with a reduced number of courses required to complete the Social Work Diploma. Interested high school students should speak to their career counsellor.

A popular program, the fall 2022 intake is nearly full and will soon be closed to further applications. Applications for the 2023 intake will open this fall. Applicants are urged to apply early as the program fills quickly. Students are accepted on a first qualified, first accepted basis so early application is beneficial.
