Northern Lakes College Welcomes New Board Chair

Mr. Barry Sharkawi

Slave Lake, Alberta (April 13, 2022): Northern Lakes College welcomes Mr. Barry Sharkawi as the new Chair of the Board of Governors.

Mr. Sharkawi is a deep-rooted resident of High Prairie with strong ties to the region. He settled in High Prairie in 1973 when he arrived in Canada from Kuwait. He began working in the restaurant industry, progressing to general manager and eventually becoming the owner of a number of restaurants. Mr. Sharkawi has been involved with community, provincial, and federal boards and agencies.

Announced by the Province of Alberta in an Order in Council on April 6, 2022, Mr. Sharkawi will serve a three-year term, effective immediately. He succeeds Mr. Daniel Vandermeulen, who served as Chair since 2014.

The College became a board-governed institution in 1998. Mr. Sharkawi is the fifth individual to fulfill the position of chairperson.
