Hailee’s Story: Personal and Professional Growth

Posted on Apr 26, 2024

Northern Lakes College has long provided opportunities for individuals seeking to transform their lives through education, and Hailee Schollaardt's journey from student to practical nurse exemplifies the College's commitment to fostering personal and professional growth. Through investment in her studies and career, Hailee not only realized her professional goals, but also found a sense of reclaimed identity and empowerment.

Hailee's decision to enrol in the Practical Nurse program at Northern Lakes College was driven by her desire to play a larger role in assisting the pharmacist at the pharmacy where she worked in Grande Prairie. Drawn to the program's practical approach and supportive learning environment, Hailee found herself immersed in an educational experience that would shape her career and her sense of self.

Reflecting on her time at Northern Lakes College, Hailee emphasizes the importance of support systems and the accommodating nature of the institution. "I first enrolled at NLC when my children were eight, six, and four years old," she recalls. "It wasn’t easy, but NLC allowed for more flexibility than other schools. I liked that part for sure! No complaints!"

Throughout her program, Hailee found inspiration and guidance from her instructors, whom she admired and looked up to. "I loved being in school. I enjoy learning. And I looked up to my instructors a lot."

One of the highlights of Hailee's educational journey was learning how to provide lactation support to new mothers. This knowledge equipped her with valuable skills and knowledge she could put to practical use at the pharmacy, which frequently serves new mothers and infants. Hailee also appreciated the efforts made by Northern Lakes College to secure practicum placements in her hometown of Grande Prairie.

Upon graduation, Hailee felt ready to transition into her new role as a Practical Nurse. "My assessment skills were much stronger after graduating from NLC," she reflects. "Before I had my education, if a patient phoned the pharmacy needing help, I’d just have to put them on hold. Now I am able to easily identify what medication they are on and educate them as necessary."

Beyond the professional growth and fulfillment she has found in her career, Hailee's educational journey has also been a source of personal empowerment. "I think a big part of going back to school, for me, was remembering that I am more than a mother," she shares. "I am a great student, too. I am smart, and I have many skills. Realizing that was really empowering for me."

Hailee's advice to prospective students: "Take the risk and enrol in education that will make a difference in your life."
