Qualifications:

  • Diploma in a related and appropriate field.
  • Acceptable technical training in the field of Occupational Health and Safety or related area.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in the Occupational Health and Safety field.
  • Clean Criminal Record Check prior to commencement.

Suggested Additional Qualifications:

  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation would be an asset.
  • National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) designation.
  • Experience in Computerized Safety Management systems.

Successful candidate must provide college or university transcripts, proof of valid driver’s license and criminal record check to Human Resources prior to commencement.

Occupational Health and Safety Officer

Job Description

Overall Purpose

The Occupational Health and Safety Officer reports to the Occupational Health and Safety Manager and is accountable for the establishment and implementation of both provincial legislative requirements and Northern Lakes College’s safety management plan which emphasizes safety in the workplace through management and staff involvement in the preparation of safe work practices. This position will also have primary responsibility for conducting/coordinating quarterly worksite inspections with members from the Joint Occupational Health & Safety Committee.

As an Occupational Health and Safety Officer it is the expectation that you will complete all provincial legislative safety training in order to be an active member of the College’s Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee.  

Primary Areas of Responsibility:

  • Support the development of provincial OH&S policies and programs
  • On-going support to employees and usage of Occupational Health and Safety digital software.
  • In consultation with the Occupational Health and Safety Manager, prepare and facilitate safety related presentations to employees as requested.
  • Assist in the review process of existing policies, procedures and regulations and recommend updates as necessary to maintain legislative compliance and changing work environments.
  • Initiate and organize different OH&S training for employees, both new and existing.
  • Advise and train on various safety-related topics such as workplace inspections, WHMIS etc.
  • Ensure that all safety inspections are carried out which include fire drills, hazard assessments and working alone procedures are managed and employees are aware of their responsibilities.
  • Inform the Occupational Health and Safety Manager of any concerns and complaints relating to health and safety issues from employees and take appropriate action.
  • Involvement in the implementation process of hazard assessments.
  • Periodic inspections of worksites to ensure all personnel are abiding to appropriate safety measures. To then identify any issues or non-conformity (for example not using personal protective equipment).
  • Stop any unsafe acts or processes that seem dangerous or unhealthy.
  • Record and conduct a preliminary investigation incident to determine cause and ensure recommended improvements are implemented.
  • Ensure full and accurate health and safety training records are maintained in their area.
  • Prepare reports on occurrences and provide statistical information to the Occupational Health and Safety Manager as requested.
  • Active involvement with Internal Committees as requested.
  • In conjunction with the Occupational Health and Safety Manager ensure monthly worksite inspections are completed, which includes inspection of AEDs and fire extinguishers.
  • Completion of employee Ergonomic Assessments as requested.
  • As required, work in conjunction with other departments to remediate/resolve worksite hazards.
  • Perform other work duties as requested.
  • Some travel for meetings, safety training and worksite visits will be required.

Skills and Knowledge:

  • In depth knowledge of legislation – particularly the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulations and Code.
  • Experience in incident and investigation process.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Mediation and conflict resolution skills.
  • Computer skills in Internet Explorer, MS Word, Excel and e-mail applications.
  • Ability to work well as part of a team.
