Salary Range: $46,680 to $56,976 per year

Qualifications:

  • Accounting Technician Certificate or equivalent;
  • 3-5 years progressive experience in a position with related competencies;
  • Combination of experience and education will be considered;
  • Advanced proficiency performing detail spreadsheet work with numerical data, with the ability to assemble, reconcile, analyze and interpret financial data, and prepare detailed reports/analyses for use by Senior Management;
  • Some travel maybe required within our Region.

Successful candidate must provide college or university transcripts and a criminal record check to Human Resources prior to commencement.

Position Description  

Accounting Assistant

Nature and Scope of Work

Reporting to the Financial Planning Supervisor, this position will be responsible for financial operations reporting, year-end and external reporting. The incumbent will apply their knowledge and attention to detail to various tasks and contribute to the direction of the department within the College. 

Duties and Responsibilities

Financial operations and reporting

  • Monthly bank reconciliations;
  • Review financial transactions to ensure compliance with the department’s/College’s policies and procedures;
  • Prepare and post adjusting entries;
  • Analyze, evaluate and monitor operating and capital expenditures;
  • Review accounting transactions entered in the finance department for accuracy;
  • Obtaining, verification and reconciliation information from various departments;
  • VISA administration;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Year-end operations

  • Preparing and posting various adjusting entries;
  • Capital assets and Bookstore inventory counts;
  • Obtaining, verification and reconciliation information from various departments.

External reporting

  • Various reports to CRA and Statistics Canada;
  • WCB annual report;
  • Quarterly Tourism Levy and GST returns;
  • Charity return.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills;
  • Attention to detail;
  • Have sufficient organizational skills to prioritize work and report on progress;
  • The candidate will also possess excellent computer skills with specific experience in Excel, Microsoft Word, Powerpoint and computerized accounting software packages (Agresso preferred);
  • Developed technical and interpersonal skills and ability to maintain good rapport with internal and external customer groups;
  • Prior experience in reviewing and reengineering of business processes is an asset;
  • Assist with training to all new Admin Assistants/budget officers, including developing training materials.
