Northern Lakes College has the following full time ongoing position available:
Library Technical Support Specialist
Salary Range: $57,012 to $75,000 per year
Location: Slave Lake
July 2, 2025 to ongoing
Qualifications:
- A Diploma in Library and Information Technology is preferred. Equivalencies in a relevant field of study and/or library experience may be considered.
- A minimum of one - two years’ experience working in a library environment is required.
- A valid class 5 driver’s license.
- A combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
Nature and Scope of Work
The Library Technical Support Specialist is responsible for technical processes related to library operations, in alignment with the strategic direction of the NLC Library and the college. These include acquisitions, cataloging, website maintenance, access to digital resources, and the Library’s NEOS and TAL commitments. Library Technical Support Specialist also includes duties related to circulation and reference services, and information literacy. The Library Technical Support Specialist reports to the Dean, Health, Human Services & University Studies.
Duties and Responsibilities
Acquisitions, Collection Development and Cataloging
- Manage acquisitions procedures, including ordering, receiving and processing new resources.
- Monitor the collections budget and submit coded invoices to the Dean, Health, Human Services & University Studies.
- Work with faculty, Chairs and Coordinators to ensure that the NLC Library Collection provides efficient and timely access to relevant resources that support NLC programs and courses.
- Catalogue NLC Library resources to the standards of the NEOS consortium, using RDA descriptive cataloguing standards.
- Run regular reports on the status of the physical and digital collections, including inventory, and lost and missing items.
- Maintain annual statistics on items added to the collection, discarded items and missing/lost items.
Technical systems
- Proactively manage and trouble-shoot digital Library systems, platforms, and subscriptions and understand how they are integrated. (E.g. EDS, databases, NEOS, library website, TAL, etc.)
- Cross check data of both internal and external library databases to ensure quality control.
- Works cooperatively with external vendors and other library service providers. (E.g. TAL, NEOS etc.)
Circulation and Reference
- Assist with the administration of circulation services, and inter-NEOS processes.
- Run regular circulation reports and maintain annual circulation statistics.
- Handle reference, research, and general inquiries from all patrons, and assist patrons with using college software, particularly LMS and MSOffice.
Information Literacy
- Assist in the development and delivery of online tutorials and online training sessions and integrate Information Literacy into library guides and the LMS.
- Assist faculty with creating assignments that require the use of information literacy skills, and provide guidance around the assessment of these skills.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Support the Dean in hiring of work-study students.
- May represent the library at college meetings.
- Represents the library on relevant NEOS sub-committees, such as the Tech Services committee.
- Provides input into the development of library processes and procedures.
- Maintains the library procedures manual for the position’s areas of responsibility.
Other Duties
- Other duties may be assigned by the Dean, Health, Human Services, & University Studies that are within the areas of knowledge and skills required by the job description.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of online databases, LibGuides or equivalent, application software, a Discovery service and MS Office.
- Ability to troubleshoot technical issues and work collaborate with the Information Technology department.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including reference service skills.
- Ability to work independently, as part of a team, to problem solve, and to take initiative.
- Project and time management abilities.
- Familiar with emerging trends in the library profession.
- Experience with a student information system and LMS are assets.
- Ability to move boxes or carts up to 50 lb.

This position is covered under the Collective Agreement between Northern Lakes College and the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees.
