Instructor, Aboriginal Arts and Design Program
Salary: $60,300 to $92,616 per year

Location: Peace River Correctional Centre
Nature and Scope of Work
The instructor will plan, prepare, deliver, and evaluate instruction in modules of the Aboriginal Arts and Design Program (AADP), Academic Upgrading (AU), and/or a focus on Career and Technology Studies (CTS) credits. Instruction takes place in a traditional face-to-face classroom at the Peace River Learning Centre within the Peace River Correctional Centre. The instructor will assemble materials, demonstrate traditional craft techniques, assist individual learners to enhance skills and complete assignments/projects, and evaluate whether learners achieve competency. There will be opportunities to instruct AU and CTS courses as well. The instructor reports to the Chair Community Learning Support and Corrections Education.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Plan and prepare lessons for each module
- Deliver lessons and evaluate learners’ skill development
- Manage learners’ performance
- Assist with program and curriculum development
- Manage the identification and assembly of module materials
- Work within the protocols of the Correctional Centre
Assets
- University Studies in Arts
- 1 year experience teaching Aboriginal Arts
- Diploma in Aboriginal Cultural Arts or related field
- Ability to speak Cree or Dene
- Experience teaching adults
- Experience teaching in an aboriginal or remote community
- Experience teaching in a correctional facility
- Comfortable with teaching Career and Technology Studies
Instruction
- Use a variety of teaching strategies to engage students in meaningful learning experiences.
- Promote learning by incorporating appropriate activities and considering the experiential backgrounds of the students.
- Communicate with students in ways they can understand (oral, visual, kinaesthetic) and by providing lessons and instructions through lecture, handouts, demonstrations, discussions, and simulations.
- Keep accurate records of student marks, interviews, case conferences, and other indicators of progress, and submit, as required.
- Participate in course development opportunities.
- Collaborate with Peers to enhance the instructional environment for students.
- Initiate and manage academic and behavioural intervention strategies as necessary.
- Meet professional obligations through efficient work habits such as meeting deadlines, honoring schedules, managing resources, and demonstrating respect for others.
- Participate in professional development to stay current in the field.
- Maintain confidentiality of information by keeping student records and personal information secure and confidential.
- Submit student evaluations and reports as required.
Student Relations
- Show common courtesy and respect for individual differences, including cultural and special needs.
- Encourage students to take pride in their performance and progress.
- Use positive feedback, encouragement, and constructive advice whenever possible.
- Encourage students to review and reflect on their performance.
- Establish clear, consistent, and reasonable expectations for student behaviour.
- Be positive and helpful to other students and staff.
- Assist students in accessing college services.
Administrative Duties
- Complete monthly student evaluations and reports for PRCC Administration.
- Monitor supply inventory and request supplies in a fiscally responsible manner through the Programs Administrator.
- Monitor tool inventory daily and report any defects or discrepancies to the Programs Administrator.
- Participate in weekly tool inventory checks, with the Programs Administrator, in adherence with PRCC policies.
- Keep a safe and healthy work environment by ensuring classroom is clean and by reporting unsafe conditions as required.
- Attend daily meetings with the PRCC Administration and other stakeholders.
- Ensure workspaces, offices and tool cabinets are kept secure, as per PRCC procedures and policies.
- Monitor supply inventory and order needed supplies in a fiscally responsible manner.
