Instructor, Paramedic Programs
Salary: $55,572 to $83,700 per year

Qualifications:
- An Advanced Care Paramedic Diploma is required.
- A Primary Care Paramedic currently enrolled in an Advanced Care Paramedic program, with related education and experience may be considered.
- Relevant degree, or enrolment in a degree program is an asset.
- Preference for a 5-year active registration with the Alberta College Paramedics, or other appropriate regulatory body, and 2-years of instructor experience.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills.
- Current CPR/BLS.
- Clear Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sectors Check.
- Unrestricted, Class 4 Alberta Driver’s License.
- A combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
Nature and Scope of Work
The key responsibilities include planning, preparing, and delivery of instruction and evaluation of students to meet the expectations of an entry-level ACP or PCP practitioner. Administrative duties and responsibilities for student and stakeholder relations. Adherence to college values, policies, procedures and regulations are expectations of the role. Working as integral member of the instructor and program team is an expectation in this role. The position reports to the Chair, Paramedic Programs.
Duties and Responsibilities
Instruction
- Maintain subject matter expertise and competencies required to work in EMS and to properly instruct assigned course materials.
- Establish a working knowledge of learning outcomes, resources, assessments and delivery methods.
- Maintain a working knowledge of the paramedic programs’ course expectations and standards.
- Provide individual and group instruction in the classroom and lab settings, adhering to approved course outlines, learning outcomes, and established program standards.
- Develop a working knowledge and implement teaching techniques, strategies, and approaches to engage adult learners in effective, meaningful learning experiences.
- Utilize a variety of instructional techniques and strategies appropriate for adult learners in face-to-face and online distance delivery.
- Ensure teaching methods adequately address various learning styles (Kinetic, Audio, Visual) regularly assessing the efficiency of the teaching methods.
- Provide students with accurate and timely information regarding courses, programs, and practicums.
- Foster student’s awareness and familiarity with the contents of the student handbooks, program and course materials, college policies, procedures and regulations directly related to students.
- Maintain current knowledge of professional practice expectations and standards established for the industry by regulatory and governing bodies and current legislations.
- Foster student development that prepares students to meet professional practice expectations.
- Provide timely, informative feedback to students by returning marked assignments, providing access to grades, providing regular progress reports, and other appropriate feedback as required.
- Provide opportunities for students' evaluation of instruction; take remedial action as needed in response to student feedback.
- Ensure exam security, co-ordinate exam schedules, and supervise exams as required.
- Collaborate with peers to enhance the instructional environment for students.
- Travel to and from the college campus for student skill lab weeks and other meetings as required.
Student Relations and Support
- Ensure a working knowledge of student rights and responsibilities within the college.
- Encourage students to take pride in their performance, progress, and professionalism.
- Employ positive feedback, encouragement, and constructive criticism to enhance learning outcomes and to support students as they overcome barriers and challenges, as appropriate.
- Encourage students to review and reflect on their performance on a regular basis.
- Establish clear, consistent, and reasonable expectations for student behaviour that aligns with college expectations and the expectations of the EMS profession.
- Assist students to access support services (Counselling, Learner Success Services, Student finance advisement, etc.) and making appropriate referrals when necessary.
- Provide appropriate student access to educational resources as required.
- Build professional working relationships with students and advocate on their behalf as appropriate.
- Demonstrate respect for individual differences and diversity.
- Encourage peer support activities.
- Monitor student attendance and progress; identify and assist students experiencing difficulties; make probation and expulsion recommendations.
- Appropriately and comprehensively maintain documentation on student progress, and follow-up as required to address risks or behaviour issues as required.
- Organize and facilitate student orientation to the program, college, and college services prior to the start of course delivery.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Quality Assurance in Program and Service Delivery
- Demonstrate a working knowledge of criteria and program standards that must be demonstrated for ongoing program approval, and contribute to its maintenance.
- Maintain a working knowledge of professional practice standards, code of ethics, legislations and regulations and practice guidelines within the field of EMS.
- Model a positive and professional image in representing the profession.
- Maintain current registration with the Alberta College of Paramedics.
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of program curriculum through established and approved processes, indicated by the program leadership.
- Maintain and encourage professional, positive, productive public relations.
- Maintain a high standard of client service.
- Identify and participate in college and program promotional activities.
- Keep accurate records of student grades, interviews, assessments, required practicum documents, and other records as indicated. Track and submit student documents for filing on the student’s record in a timely manner.
- Maintain confidentiality of information and student records in accordance with FOIP legislation, policies, procedures, and regulations.
- Be familiar with, and adhere to, college and program policies, procedures, and guidelines.
- Participate in regular professional development; annually identify learning goals and provide evidence of progress toward achieving goals as part of the performance appraisal process.
- Be familiar with relevant OH&S legislations and workplace policies, and contribute to a safe and healthy work and learning environment.
- Adhere to the requirements in the use of college technology in accordance with the guidelines, security measures, and policies set forth by the college.
- Meet professional obligations through efficient work habits such as meeting deadlines, honouring schedules, managing resources, and identifying inefficiencies when they exist.
- Engage in self- reflection and address areas for improvement as recognized.
- Carry out duties in compliance with applicable legislations, professional regulations, and college policies.

Assets
- Previous experience in adult education and the post-secondary environment.
- Degree or certification in education is preferred.
- Experience in quality assurance, curriculum development, and experience with accreditation and provincial standard compliance.
- Certification in one or more the following: ITLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP.
- Certified Instructor in one or more of the following: ITLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP, CPR/BLS
- Experience teaching with simulation and utilizing simulation equipment and technology.
- Experience teaching using a variety of distance learning and online teaching technologies.
- Experience working with diverse cultures and backgrounds.
- Experience in any other relevant emergency or urgent care health service agency.
Successful candidate must provide College or University transcripts and a Criminal Record Check to Human Resources prior to commencement.
This position is covered under the Collective Agreement between Northern Lakes College and the Faculty Association of Northern Lakes College.
