Details

Course Description

Please Note: Registration Deadline is 1 week before the course start date.

This 60-hour course, delivered in two modules, will prepare you to become an effective bookkeeper and/or work as a financial clerk/assistant within an organization.

Module 1: Introduction to Accounting/Financial Statements (5 6hr sessions with a 1 hour break for lunch) looks at the theory and the steps involved in preparing books for a business or organization in Alberta or the NWT. Using an accounting simulation consisting of actual source documents from a fictitious business, students will enter one month of financial transactions for a small company using the manual five-journal system.

Module 2: Computerized Bookkeeping using Quickbooks (5 6hr sessions with a 1 hour break for lunch) is spent teaching you how to enter financial transactions (using the same accounting simulation from Module 1) into a computerized accounting software program (Quickbooks). Time is also spent on looking at more detailed information on topics including Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, Payroll, GST/HST, Bank and Cash Accounts. Building on the understanding of the accounting cycle learned in Module 1, students are taught how to enter the data and manage the paperwork for all aspects of the finances of a small business or organization.

Is this course for you? This course is designed to enhance the knowledge of people presently employed in a bookkeeping or finance position, or interested in pursuing a career in a bookkeeping position. The program includes comprehensive information for bookkeepers and finance clerks/assistants.
