Pre-Employment Heavy Equipment Technician

Program Overview

Heavy equipment technicians maintain, repair, and overhaul heavy vehicles and industrial equipment.

Heavy equipment technicians are employed by specialized repair shops and organizations that own or lease heavy equipment used in the construction, mining, forestry, materials handling, landscaping, land clearing, agricultural and transportation industries.

Further Educational Training Opportunities: Heavy Equipment Technician Apprenticeship Program: First Period, Second Period, Third Period, and Fourth Period. The term of apprenticeship for a Heavy Equipment Technician is 4 years. This includes a minimum of 1500 hours of on-the-job training as an apprentice, and 16 weeks of technical training each year.

Program Delivery

Traditional classroom setting with shop and lab practical applications and demonstrations.

If academic requirements are not met you will need to do an ACCUPLACER assessment. Minimum levels: 70 in Reading Comp., 55 in Arithmetic, and 50 in Elementary Algebra. Contact your nearest campus to schedule an appointment. Pre-Employment students are NOT required to be registered with Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AIT).

Minimum Requirements: English 20-2, Math 20-3, Science 10; or a passing mark in all five Canadian General Educational Development (GED) tests; or a passing mark on Alberta Industry and Training's Entrance Exam.

Category B: Recommended Path: Alberta High School Diploma with: English 30-2, Math 30-2, Physics 30 OR Chemistry 30 OR Biology 30 OR Science 30, Related Career and Technology Studies (CTS) Courses.
