Pre-Employment Industrial Mechanic (Millwright)

Program Overview

This occupation is most rewarding for those who enjoy variety, security and doing precision work with machinery and equipment. Industrial Mechanics (Millwrights) install, maintain, repair and troubleshoot stationary industrial machinery and mechanical equipment in sites such as factories, production plants and recreational facilities. To be successful in their trade, Industrial Mechanics need the strength and stamina required to work with heavy equipment weighing in excess of 25 kilograms, good coordination and manual dexterity, the ability to visualize a layout by looking at plans and blueprints, the ability to comprehend and trouble-shoot mechanical systems, the ability to get along with and sometimes supervise the work of others.

Further Educational Training Opportunites: Industrial Mechanic Apprenticeship Program: First Period, Second Period, Third Period, and Fourth Period. Through the Program, tradespersons can obtain a Red Seal endorsement on their provincial/territorial certificates by successfully completing an interprovincial Red Seal examination. The Interprovincial Standards Red Seal Program acknowledges their competence and ensures recognition of their certification throughout Canada without further examination. Industrial mechanics (millwrights) often possess overlapping skills with other trades such as steamfitter/pipefitter, industrial instrument mechanic, welder, machinist or industrial electrician. They may be certified in these other trades as well. Industrial mechanics (millwrights) may work in specialized trade areas such as fluid analysis, vibration analysis and laser alignment. With experience, they may advance to other positions such as mentor, supervisor, planner, superintendent or trainer.

Program Delivery

Traditional classroom setting with shop and lab practical applications and demonstrations. Work-integrated learning, Workplace Communications and Industrial Safety Certifications are new components of this program.

If academic requirements are not met, you will need to do an ACCUPLACER assessment.

Pre-employment students are NOT required to be registered with Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AIT).

Minimum Requirement: English 20-2, Math 20-3, Science 10 Or AIT Entrance Exam, or, or a passing mark in the Canadian Adult Education Certificate (CAEC), or successful completion of all 5 GED Tests.

Category B: Recommended Path: Alberta High School Diploma with: English 30-2, Math 30-3, Physics 30 or Chemistry 30 or Science 30.

Students must achieve a minimum of 65% cumulative weighted average for the program's courses with no course below 50%, and a final exam mark 65% or higher in order to achieve successful completion for AIT's standards. Please note: If you choose to challenge your AIT exam you must receive a 70% passing mark on the exam to successfully pass that period of training.
